Baby Boomers and the Menopause Explosion

Tag: Healthadmin @ 5:35 pm

Medically speaking, menopause is an exact date; it is the exact date when a woman is no longer capable of conceiving. It is the date a woman has the last day of her final menstruation. To stray on the side of caution and get 100% confirmation, it usually isn’t confirmed until one complete year without any bleeding. This is just a general precaution because during the later part of perimenopause, bleeding is very erratic and it’s not uncommon to skip a few months without bleeding only to then experience a little break through bleeding. So, until this final year has passed, a woman may quite possibly still be fertile.

Menopause has changed a lot through the years. For past generations, menopause literally was life’s final phase; life spans were a lot shorter than they are currently. Plus they didn’t have the medical advances that we do today allowing older people to remain active longer. Nowadays a woman who makes it to the age of menopause can expect to live an additional 30 years past menopause. But not only are women living longer, they are also living a lot more active vibrant lives than was ever possible in previous generations.

The face of menopause will definitely be changing with the advent of unprecedented numbers of the baby boomer generation reaching menopause age, 2,000,000 women are now entering into menopause every year. Baby boomers are likely to be the best thing that ever happened to menopause. Baby boomers have money, they are healthier and they’re more active going into their older retirement years than earlier generations. All of this can only have a positive effect on aging and how people, especially women, view menopause. Menopause is no longer the end of life; it is now a time of transition and simply a moving into a new phase of life. A lot of women are surprised to find this new phase a time of great happiness, a time when they to move beyond the responsibilities of family and children and more fully embrace the life they want.
