Home Style with Large Area Rugs

When accessorizing a room, rugs play an important part. Whether they are going over hardwood, tile, even carpet, a rug will add another dimension to a room. As different sizes and materials are available, it is important to get the one that best fits the area, both in size and durability. Also, think about color and use the prominent colors in the room, plus any secondary colors to coordinate the rug.

As for size, the rule of thumb differs room to room, but a rug should big enough for any furniture to fit comfortably on it with extra rug overhand. For instance, in a dining room, the rug should be large enough for all of the chairs to be pulled out from the table with the legs staying on the rug, not reaching the floor. Large area rugs will usually work quite well here. The same goes for a bedroom. If the rug is going under the bed, enough rug should be on either side so feet will land on rug, not cold floor each morning.

Depending on where the rug is, the durability needs will vary as well. The bedroom or dining room rug will not need to withstand what a rug in a kitchen or entry way will. Jute or sisal rugs are great choices for durable kitchen rugs, whether it is a smaller one in front of the sink or a larger one under the kitchen table. Not only will the kitchen rugs get more traffic, but they will also need to stand up to spills and crumbs.

Rugs can brighten up a room so have fun with them. A cheery rug works nice in a kitchen, while a warm color like a red area rug could be perfect in a living room to play up the cozy warmth. Bathrooms can afford bright colors as the space is smaller.

Again, think of area rugs as layering tools and remember space, durability and color. Rugs can add great dimension, warmth and style to any room.
